She was born July 19, 1923, to Herbert and Alma (Beckmann) Suhr on a farm near Staplehurst, NE. and grew up in Seward County. Melba was baptized on August 12, 1923 at the Zion Lutheran Church (now Our Redeemer Church) in Marysville, NE. She was confirmed on March 21, 1937 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica, NE. Melba graduated from Beaver High School in Beaver Crossing in May 1941 and earned college credits from Concordia University in Seward, NE and Concordia College in River Forest, Chicago, IL. She taught school in Seward County rural schools; Bethany Lutheran in Houston, Texas; St. Paul's Lutheran School in Omaha; and Trinity Lutheran School in Fremont. Melba married Lowell Steckelberg on June 12, 1949 at Zion Lutheran Church (now Our Redeemer Lutheran) in Marysville, NE. Two children were born to this marriage: Allen Lowell in 1952 and James Milton 1954.

Melba's family and church activities were the most important focus in her life. She had one brother, Marvin Suhr, who passed away in 2014. She has 5 granddaughters and 4 great grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her cousins, John, Marilyn, Marjorie, and Geraldine. She loved to fish, and loved going to the Fremont lakes and to her son's cabin in Wisconsin. Melba had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and plants and flowers of all varieties.

She is survived by:

James Milton Steckelberg and his wife, Christie of Rochester, MN
Granddaughters: Jamie Steckelberg Scott and her husband Jeffrey of Lincoln, NE;
Chelsea Steckelberg Weinstein and husband David of Minneapolis, MN;
Rachel Steckelberg of Los Angeles, CA; Ali Steckelberg Piper and her husband Scott of Omaha, NE;
Kathryn Steckelberg Handlogten and husband Jason of Rochester, MN.
Great Grandchildren: Mara Scott, Lincoln, NE; Preston Scott, Lincoln, NE; Oliver Piper, Omaha, NE; Violet
Weinstein, Minneapolis, MN.
Sister-in-law: Dawn Suhr of Oceanside, CA.
Nieces, nephews, cousins.
Melba was preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Alma Suhr and brother Marvin Suhr.

The funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday (Sept. 29th) at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Dan Heuer.
The committal will follow in Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran School. Visitation will be at the Ludvigsen Mortuary on Sunday from 2 to 7 PM.
