She retired in July of 2001.

On November 4, 1978, Debbie married Richard T. Peterson. She and Dick met when they both served on the Dodge County Board of the American Red Cross. They both served for many years and volunteered in disasters, bloodmobile, and emergency contact with military families. They both served as Chapter Chairmen. Debbie served as Chairman from 1980 to 1984. She also served on regional committees and was the chairperson for a Bi-state Red Cross Council for Nebraska and South Dakota in the 1990's.
