He attended Hooper High School but left after the death of his father to work on the family farm and help support his mother and four younger siblings. He married Margaret Nelson on April 8, 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. Burnell and Margaret farmed for 45 years east of Hooper and were faithful members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Hooper during that time. He did volunteer work for the church and was an active member of the Lutheran Layman's League. Burnell and his brother Dean raised corn, soybeans and cattle. Burnell was a self-taught, skilled mechanic and took pride in maintaining his farm equipment and automobiles. He was a devoted father and supported his daughters in their interests of horseback riding and music.
