He was born in Fremont on August 3, 1925 to Albert and Irene (Growcock). On January 20, 1945 he was married in San Diego to Margaret Edgington.

He joined the Fremont Police Department in 1947 and became the department's first detective. The Ackerman's moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in October of 1963. There he worked in security for several of the hotels. He was a detective at Caesars Palace. He received his license in January of 1967 and started his own detective and investigation business.

Donald was the first commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 of Fremont. He had served in the United States Navy during WW II.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation at the Ludvigsen Mortuary will be on Tuesday (June 19th) from 9 to 11 AM, followed by a graveside service in Ridge Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered by the Fremont Honor Guard of American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854.
