Dorothy May Phillips, daughter of James Phillips and Nytha Vernon was born March 31, 1923 in Dallas, Iowa. She attended school in Burlington, Iowa and graduated Valedictorian from Burlington High in 1941. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Mercy Hospital in Chicago, Illinois in 1944.
In December 1944 Dorothy was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She served with the 312 General Hospital Unit, 262 Staging Hospital Unit and 47th General Hospital. She landed in Luzon in the Philippines after General McArthur's return and then was stationed in Japan. Dorothy was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the A-P Theatre Ribbon with Bronze Battle Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Overseas Service Bar and the Victory Metal.
After the war Dorothy attended Midland Lutheran College for a year. On December 11, 1949 she was united in marriage to Sheldon L. Christensen. She was a homemaker, mother and grandmother who loved traveling, playing bridge and watching her grandchildren. Dorothy was also active in an extension club and her church circle along with several bridge clubs.
Dorothy is preceded in death and her parents and her husband Sheldon, who passed away in 1985 after 35 years of marriage.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter Nytha Glass and son-in-law David Glass of Hastings, her two sons, Phil Christensen and daughter-in-law Bobbi of Omaha and Ken Christensen and daughter-in-law Lisa of Waterloo. Six grandchildren, Christopher Glass of London, England, Mindy (Glass) and Dan Klein of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Chase Christensen of Lincoln, Jessica Christensen of Waterloo, Paige Christensen and Lauryn Christensen of Omaha. Two brothers, Art and Shirley Phillips of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Jim and Ruth Phillips of Austin, Minnesota. Two sisters, Jerri McCollouch and Jo and Mel Schneider both of Fremont and many nieces and nephews.
