He was born to Mac and Lovisa (Egglestone) Gentry in Winterset, Iowa where he grew up. He graduated from Winterset High School. He served in the United States Coast Guard from March of 1946 to May of 1947.
He came to Fremont to work for Hormel's and retired from there, having worked in several different departments for a total of 42 years.
He was first married to Juanita Grimes, and they later divorced. On June 1, 1972 he was married to Merna Todd Hester and she preceded him in death on January 6, 2001.
He was a member of VFW Post 854 of Fremont and had been active with the Fremont Volunteer Fire Dept for many years. He was a former member of the Fremont Eagles Aerie 200. He enjoyed camping, hunting and Nebraska football.
Survived by 3 sons, Terry and wife Marlys Gentry and Randy and wife Dianne Gentry all of Fremont, and Brad and wife Rose Gentry of Kearney, daughter Pam and husband John Neuman of Omaha, 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; 2 sisters Bernadine and husband Glen Wilson of Oklahoma City, Irma Lea and husband Bobby Brannum of Poplar Bluff, MO., and special friend Faye Haney of Fremont. He was preceded by a sister Maxine.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM Friday at Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel, Fremont, with the United States Flag Presentation. Memorials are suggested to Odyssey Hospice.
