John was born in Fremont to Charles and Jennie (Westerlin) Carlstrom. He grew up in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School. He joined his father and brother Roy, in a business that became Carlstrom Bros. Construction Co.
Carlstrom Bros. were intimately involved in building Fremont through the construction of many of the city's buildings. Some of the projects included building part of the Fremont Area Medical Center, former First National Bank building, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Lincoln, Clarmar, and Howard elementary school buildings, buildings on the now Midland University campus, Village Inn, former Holiday Lodge (now Clarion Inn), Fremont Golf Club, Fremont Tribune building, and many others in Fremont. Carlstrom also worked in other locations. They built 2 schools and a hospital in Iowa, and schools in western Nebraska. Other work involved sewer, water, and street projects in some of Fremont's subdivisions. They worked in Hooper, Scribner, Arlington, and paving projects in North Bend and Hooper. John retired in 1986.
In January of 2007, John stepped down from his position on the Dodge County Board of Supervisors after serving for 18 years. Other supervisors he had worked with spoke very highly of his dedication to the board and to Dodge County. His favorite job was getting the courthouse building remodeled, bringing it up to standards required by the federal government.
He served on the Fremont Planning Commission for 15 years, chairing it for 12 years. He was past president of the Fremont Optimist Club, and Fremont Contractors Association. He had served on the board of directors of the Fremont Family YMCA, Ridge Cemetery Board, and he had been a member of the Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Fremont Masonic Lodge No. 15 A.F. & A.M. And he was a member of The Presbyterian Church.
On October 19, 1940 John was married to Lila Neufind. She preceded him in death on December 29, 1995. Then on October 11, 1999, John was married to Marilyn Meyer Reed.
