"One of the best treats growing up around the Omaha/Fremont/Fontanelle area was visiting Uncle Ed's farm in Nickerson. I remember many hot Summer days shucking sweet corn in the cool shade of the trees in front of the farm house. Helping Florence and Mabel gather eggs from the hen house was always scary since you never knew when you might get a face full of feathers when a hen didn't like your hand under her... And there were the days in the milk barn when Florence or Mabel let us kids "help" milk the cows. There were always barn cats/kittens lined up along the wall of the barn to scramble for a squirt of milk that was sent their way. And the hand-cranked ice cream in the Winter (using ice crushed from the horse tanks and cream from the separator in the farmhouse basement) was always a hit with everyone - especially when you were old enough to help crank the can till it became ice cream! Sledding on the long, sloping hill on the East pasture was first rate, especially when someone drove the IH tractor down to the bottom of the hill and we all chained together to go back up the hill. There was always something warm and tasty inside when we all got too cold to sled anymore - some of Mabel's handiwork. And I have to say that Mabel's cookies were always the best, bar none. In the Spring, that same pasture became an excellent place to fly your kite... Seemed like we had them a mile high in the air! Yes, there are a lot of great memories that were forged for a lifetime by Florence, Mabel and Uncle Ed. And I will always keep them in my heart..."

"This name is a reminder of the 10 years our family spent in Nickerson, NE in the late 1950-early 60's. It was a great place for our children to get their start in life. Mabel and her sister were a big part of the activities around Nickerson."
