Arlene was born June 3, 1950 in Fremont, Nebraska to Ross and Fern (Shaffer) Christensen. She grew up on a farm in rural Hooper, Nebraska. She attended elementary school at Districts 75 and 88, and graduated from Hooper High School in 1968. Arlene was active in 4-H for seven years and participated in sewing, cooking, and gardening. She won blue ribbons for her vegetables at the Dodge County Fair. She enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers, and was especially proud of her African violets. Arlene loved to sing and play the piano. In high school she was active in Girls Glee and the Pep Club. After graduating from high school, she moved to Omaha, where she attended Nettleton Business College. She went on to work at First National Bank, doing a variety of administrative jobs. She became a patient at Douglas County Health Center (DCHC) in June of 2001, and lived there ever since.

Arlene loved birds, cats, and dogs, and she looked forward to the times when dogs would come to visit at DCHC. She enjoyed playing Yahtzee, bingo, and Wii bowling. One of her favorite TV shows was Dancing with the Stars. She also enjoyed going on outings to Wal-Mart and the zoo. Her favorite animals at the zoo were the big cats and penguins. She looked forward to visits from her Wisconsin niece Angela and her great nephew, Angela's son August. Her fellow residents at DCHC described her as kindhearted, polite, easy going, fiercely competitive at Wii bowling, with a wonderful laugh. She was the May 2012 resident of the month.

"I read with sadness about the loss of Arlene. May God's tender mercies be with the family during this grievous time. Life is so precious, but so fleeting. Draw close to your Heavenly Father and He will sustain you. He has given us his son that we might have hope. Jesus relayed a promise from his heavenly Father-Jehovah-(Ps.83:18) that the hour is coming in which there would be a bringing back to life (or resurrection) of all those in the memorial tombs. (John 5:28)(Psalms 37:29) This will be a time of great rejoicing; when Almighty God makes all things new. I look forward to seeing my deceased loved ones again when the earth becomes a paradise. Matthew 5:5. I pray that you can draw comfort from the hope of seeing Arlene again also. Loving thoughts and prayers of peace are with you."

"My condolances to the Christensen siblings of Arlene. Many fond memories of all the family while my daughters, Debbie and Valerie attended Dist. 88 with Arlene, Verla and Glenn in and about the 1960 's. My daughters remember Arlene playing the piano and a sweet personality. Debbie was once invited to the family home for snow icecream... a treat and fun time together. Arlene's parents were a kind, farm family that were active at Dist. 88 . I visited Ross while he was at Hooper Care Center. In sympathy and prayer, Clarice (Mrs. Curtis) Christensen - Magnuson"
