Gordon C. "Red" Brannon
passed away peacefully on Sept 12, 2012
at A.J. Merrick Hospice after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Gordon C. Brannon was born on March 30, 1933 in San Francisco, CA. He was raised in Southern California until the age of 10, when his family moved to Alda, NE in 1943. Ultimately, settling in Wood River, NE in 1947. Gordon graduated from Wood River High School in 1951. Gordon married Maxyne Steffen on February 21, 1954 in Grand Island, NE. He began his career with Geo. A. Hormel Company in 1955 in Fremont, NE. Gordon worked for Hormel in Columbus, NE and Pocatello, ID, returning to Fremont in 1970. He retired in 1973 from Hormel to establish Brannon Enterprises and pursue private land and business development in Fremont until his death.
Family was the center of Red's world-coaching over the years and then moving to the sidelines to watch the grandkids in any sport. He loved Husker Sports and the 49'ers. He was a 60 year member of the Episcopal Church-42 years at St. James in Fremont, NE. Gordon was a 58 year member of the Masonic Lodge #318 in Grand Island, NE. and a member of the Fremont Eagles FOE #200. Gordon was also an active member of several civic and community organizations.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxyne Brannon of Fremont, NE; Son, Scott Brannon (Dawn) of Omaha; Son, Mike Brannon (Amy) of Williston, ND; Son, Curt Brannon (Pat) of Elkhorn, NE; Daughter, Steffenie Morine (Jack) of Blair, NE. Sister, Lynne Manning (Gilbert) of Grand Island, NE, and family.
Red was the most proud of his grandchildren: Shae Brannon of Los Angeles, CA; Miranda Brannon (fiancé Ted Turnblacer) of Baltimore, MD; Ian & Halle Brannon of Elkhorn, NE; and Hannah & Abbey Morine of Blair, NE.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents.
Per Red's wishes, a private family service will be held with no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St James Episcopal Church, Fremont, NE or the Wood River NE Foundation, Wood River, NE.
A Celebration of Life (Irish Party) will be held at The Gathering Place, 750 N Clarmar Street, Fremont, NE on Saturday, Sept 15 from 5-8 pm. The family requests that everyone come casual and wear green to honor a great Irishman. A Special Family Toast will be held at 6:30 pm. Come to celebrate!
