He was a dear friend, and even though many miles have separated us over these past several years, I shall miss him greatly."

"Doug was a true gentleman and a mentor to me. I remember countless hours of standing in the rotunda with Doug monitoring the Legislature. Doug was such a giving, wonderful man who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need. We shared many laughs together and many long discussions about education and politics. I loved to ask him about his career as a teacher and hear the stories he would tell. We also shared long accounts of our trips abroad. I will miss my friend Doug greatly."
