He was drafted into the army in 1944 and was stationed at Fort Sill, OK; Fort Bragg, NC; and Camp Shelby, MS. Upon separation from the military he returned to Nebraska and got his pilot's license in Lincoln. "I took my very first ride in an airplane with Paul when I was around 8 years old. He gave flight instruction to me and my dad and mom. We all still repeat some of the things he would say back then. "Treat the airplane rough, and it will treat you rough." I looked at my log book today and saw that I first had Paul as my instructor on 10/4/77 in N2933S. Paul gave me my Private Pilot checkride on 12/5/78 in aircraft N66686. All of his and Dave Bauer's instruction at the Fremont airport led me to where I am today; an international Boeing 767 captain for a major airline. Previously planned family commitments will prevent my attending his funeral this week, but he will certainly be in my thoughts. His very competent instruction and aircraft handling tips lives on every time I climb aboard an airplane. He will be missed. My condolences to the family, and to Jim and the guys at the Fremont airport. Sincerely; Jay D. Bowman"

"Both Helen and I took flying lessons from Paul. We became friends. We loved Paul and loved being in that airplane with him. He helped us leave the earth and sour into the skys. Now Paul has left the earth for good and has soured up into the heavens. We will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul and his family."
