Bertha was born January 18, 1917 in rural Hooper to Emil and Rose (Larsen) Petersen and grew up on the farm near Winslow. She attended school in Winslow until the 10th grade and graduated from Hooper High School in 1935, later receiving her bachelor of education degree from Midland College (now Midland University) in Fremont. She taught in rural schools in Dodge and Washington counties, and in Hooper, Winslow, Nickerson and Uehling for over 20 years.
She was a correspondent for the Hooper-Scribner Newspaper until she was 80 years of age. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC of Uehling. She taught Sunday School, Bible School, Christian Education, and belonged to the Women's Fellowship. She was a 62 year member of the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 196 of Uehling.
She became a resident of the Embers Assisted Living facility in Coleridge, then moving into the Park View Haven in Coleridge a couple years ago, having been a long time Uehling resident.
On December 22, 1946, Bertha Petersen was married to Howard Olson.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Howard in March of 1988. She was also preceded by grandchildren Kristin and David Milander, brothers Victor and Dean Petersen.
The funeral service will be 2 PM Friday in the First Congregational Church, UCC in Uehling with Pastor Larry Jirsak. The committal will follow in the Swaburg Baptist Cemetery (south of Uehling). Memorials are suggested to the First Congregational Church, UCC of Uehling and the Swaburg Baptist Cemetery Association.
Visitation will be at Ludvigsen's Hooper Funeral Chapel in Hooper on Thursday from 3 to 8 PM, with the family present after 6 PM. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:30 PM.
