Lois was born January 11, 1924, to Otto and Annie (Bauer) Wapelhorst on the family farm west of Scribner, Nebraska. Shortly after graduating from Scribner High School in 1942, her mother passed away. Along with her sister Elaine and brother Wallace, the three siblings assumed the household chores. She also taught school at a one-room schoolhouse west of Scribner. On June 25, 1946, she married Leigh B. Flores of West Point at the Congregational Church in Scribner. Together, they rented a farm southwest of Uehling and were blessed with three sons, Stephen, Rodney, and Jeffrey. Eventually, they purchased their farm north of Hooper where they resided until they built their new home in Scribner and turned over the farming operation to their oldest son, Steve.
Lois was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Hooper, where she was a long-time member of the church choir and Women of ELCA. She also was active in the Dodge County Extension and several neighborhood card clubs.
Lois and Leigh enjoyed square dancing, traveling with friends, family gatherings, and playing cards. Lively banter and laughter were trademarks of any card game at their table. Together, Lois and Leigh found particular joy in the activities of their eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; they often drove long distances to support them. Lois enjoyed crafts, flower and vegetable gardening, as well as canning. She loved cooking for her family and having them gathered together. Her baking efforts were usually consumed before they cooled, unless she was careful to hide the freshly baked goods before her family came into the house. Lois and Leigh enjoyed over 66 years of marriage before Leigh passed away in August of 2012.
Surviving family includes a son, Rodney (Kathy) Flores of Larkspur, Colorado, Daughters-in-law, Jane Flores of Hooper and Julie Flores of Dysart, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Brian Flores, Becky (James) Sells, Stacey (Shawn) Smith, Barbara Flores, Laura Flores, Blake (Kaela) Flores, Ian (Erin) Flores, and Haley Flores; two step-grandchildren, Kelly (Julie) Lefler and Karmen (Travis) Hembury; five great-grandchildren, Breanna, Ellie, Jacob, Tessa, and Liam and three step-great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Jack, and Kameron.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Stephen and Jeffrey; her parents; a step-mother, Meta Wapelhorst; sister, Elaine Tate; brother, Wallace; sisters-in-law, Arlene Wapelhorst, Doris Johnson, Dorothy Hiatt, and Dorothy Flores; brothers-in-law, Stanley Johnson, Gordon Flores, Earl Flores, Norby Kampsnider, and Max Tate.
The funeral will be 11am Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Hooper. The Rev. Judy Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 3pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6pm to 8pm at Ludvigsen's Scribner Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church.
