Glenn was born August 4, 1929 in Omaha Nebraska to Clarence and Anne 'Welchert' Ries. He attended District 12 rural school through grade 10 and graduated from Scribner High School in 1946. He was active in Basketball and went to state in track.
After graduation he worked construction, and then operated a successful Omar Business in the Dodge County area. After recovering from a life threatening accident resulting in the loss of his right eye, he worked for Zuckers hatchery, and then for Ebel Alfalfa as a maintenance supervisor. In retirement he worked part time for Sanger Manufacturing.
He was a baseball player! As a member of the Pioneer Night League and Dodge County League, he was a catcher/fielder... fast, good arm, hit for power and average. A fabled career, cut tragically short by his injuries.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, serving in many roles. He was a Knight of Columbus, was active on the parish council, served as a trustee, was instrumental in the obtaining and installation of beautiful stain glass windows, and kept the candles available for worship and personal devotion. Glenn was a member of Rosary Makers and personally assembled over 9000 rosaries that have been sent to Catholic missions all over the world.
He served on the Board of the Scribner Good Samaritan Center, Fair Acres Court, and St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. On November 13, 1950 he married R. Jeannine Haun... and her entire family! Swing and a hit.
Glenn gardened like his father before him, fished like his mother's family, and was generous like his Lord. He loved his wife, his life, his family, and his home. He was the number one fan of any activity of a child or grandchild, sport, art, or endeavor...and of course, live or via cable he rooted for the Trojans, Huskers. and God love him the Chicago Cubs. He loved, worked, and lived with passion. His legacy survives him.
Glenn is survived by his precious wife, daughters, Mary (Mike) Jensen of Cincinnati, OH.; Susan (Richard) Dames of Lincoln, NE.; sons, John (Nadine Smeal) Ries of Omaha, NE.; and James Ries of Scribner, NE. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Brother LaVon (USMC), and grandchild Nicholas James Ries.
The Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30am Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Scribner. Father Damien Wee will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Ridgeley. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Lawrence Catholic Church or Scribner Good Samaritan Center. Visitation will be Friday from 3pm to 8pm with the family present from 6pm to 8pm at the church. A Wake Service with Rosary will begin at 7pm.
