She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Snyder. She graduated from Snyder High School. She was a graduate of Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha. Virgene served on the Board of Education for Mead Public Schools and was part of the Mead Library Board. She worked part-time for the United States Postal Service in Mead. She and Kenneth enjoyed traveling to Barbershop contests and to various sites during their retirement years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Kenneth. Those who remain to grieve her loss and rejoice in the gift of her life are: son David (Alice) Schuette of Lincoln, NE; daughters, Naomi (Robert) Schroeder of Jansen, NE; Karen (Bill) Hartwig of Fremont, NE; Valerie (Ron) Sukup of Winnetoon, NE.
