John was born January 27, 1935 in Chicago, Ill. to John P. and Florence (Andres) McMullen. He graduated from Parker High School in Chicago in 1952, and from Peru State College in Nebraska in 1956. He received his MA in 1960 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. John taught biology and psychology at Fremont High School for 39 years. He coached football, track and field, and wrestling for many of those years while at the Fremont High School. He was also an adjunct instructor at Clarkson College in Omaha for 3 years and at Wayne State College in Wayne, NE for many years.
John married Lois Puppe on August 26, 1956 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC in Fremont where he served on several boards and taught church school and mentored confirmation.
Some of his professional honors include: induction in the Nebraska State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1983; Outstanding Service Award in Wrestling from the Nebraska School Activities Association in 1998; the Christa McAuliffe Special Recognition Prize in Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and induction to the Fremont Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
He is survived by his wife Lois, son Mike and wife Katie McMullen of Houston, Texas, daughter Janet and husband Paul Schorfheide of Lincoln, and grandchildren Ivy and Maya McMullen and Matt Schorfheide, sister-in-law Margaret Richards of Lincoln, nephews and nieces, and great nephews and great nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents John P. and Florence McMullen, mother and father-in-law Gus and Marie Puppe, sister-in-law and brothers-in-law Marilyn and Dean Stauffer and John Richards.
A memorial service will be held on November 12, 2011 (a Saturday) at 10 AM in the First Congregational Church, UCC (1550 N. Broad St.) with private interment later. Memorials may be sent to the First Congregational Church, UCC at 1550 N. Broad St., Fremont, NE 68025
There will be a visitation with the family on November 11th (Friday) at the Ludvigsen Mortuary from 6 to 8 PM.
