He was born in Fremont, March 6, 1929, to Peter A.C. and Christina (Christensen) Nelson. He was baptized in the Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church (northwest of Fremont) and confirmed there in 1942. He grew up on the farm northwest of Fremont attending Rosedale School through the 8th grade, and graduating from Fremont High School in 1946. He attended Dana College in Blair.
He worked for his brother Russell on the farm until 1949, then farmed with his father during the year of 1950, and in January of 1951 began military service in the U.S. Army. He was a medic serving in Korea from August of 1951 until December of 1952 when he was discharged. He worked for Gambles warehouse until November of 1953, then he began employment with Hormel's in Fremont, working there from 1953 until 1984. During all his working years, he also farmed the farm that he owned in Saunders County. After retiring, he helped his wife Eileen with the child care she operated. Perry and Eileen received the child care 'Provider of the Year' award from the state in 1990, and he had also been named an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska by then governor Ben Nelson.
Perry was a member of First Lutheran Church where taught Sunday school for more than 25 years, was in the choir, and had served as a Deacon, Vice President and then President of the church council.
He was preceded in death by a brother Russell Nelson (and his wife Doris), brother Shurley Nelson, and sister Priscilla Skov, and brother-in-law- Rev.Allison Hansen.
On June 26, 1951, Perry was married to Eileen Boschult at First Lutheran Church in Fremont. On the occasion of their 60 wedding anniversary on June 26 of last year, Gov. Dave Heineman declared that day to be the "Perry and Eileen Nelson Day"

The funeral service will be 10:30 AM Thursday at First Lutheran Church (3200 E. Military) with the Rev. Matt Knopf and Rev. Norman Freund. The committal will follow in Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors by the Fremont Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854. Visitation at the Ludvigsen Mortuary will be on Wednesday from 2 to 8 PM, and continue at the church Thursday morning for an hour before the service.
