Joan was born one of nine children on March 7, 1930 in Iowa City to Wilbur and Catherine 'Burns' Ruppenkamp. She was raised in West Branch, Iowa. At the age of 13 she went to boarding school in Ottumwa, Iowa, and graduated from Ottumwa Heights Academy in 1948. She then attended Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa. Joan married Ralph E. Hobt on January 22, 1951 in Iowa City. After their marriage they moved to Chariton, Iowa. Joan worked for the telephone company for a short time until starting a family and raising seven children. While living in Chariton she was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed entertaining, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. After her husband passed away Joan moved to Hooper to live with her daughter.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ralph in 2003, grandson Andrew Hobt, Sister Catherine Anne Ruppenkamp, Patricia Ruppenkamp, Theresa Moe.
The funeral mass will be 10:30am Friday November 2 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Father Jim Kiernan and Father Damien Wee will co-celebrate the mass. Visitation at Ludvigsen's Hooper Funeral Chapel will be Thursday from 5pm to 7pm with family. A wake service will be at 7pm also at the chapel. A graveside service will be 11am Saturday at Calvary Cemetery in Chariton, Iowa.
