Merwyn W. 'Mert' Dunker age 80, of Fremont
Died Sunday January 29, 2017 at Dunklau Gardens
Merwyn was born January 28, 1937 in Fremont to Harry and Evelyn 'Robertson' Dunker. He attended schools in Fremont, graduating in 1955 from Fremont High School. He attended Midland College (now Midland University) in Fremont for 2 years, San Diego, CA Junior College, College of William & Mary in Hampton, VA and the University of Nebraska-Omaha in Omaha, NE.
Merwyn spent 2 years in the United States Air Force, a service of which he was very proud.
He did mechanical design work for Leo A Daley Co. in Omaha and was a Mechanical Engineer at General Motors Technical Center and General Moters Plant Engineering & Construction in the Detroit, MI. area. He also worked as a designer and sales manager for a lawn & garden business after retiring from GM.
In 1957 Merwyn joined The Omaha Roadstars Car Club and won his first award for his custom 1931 Ford pick up truck. In the days before electronic timing lights he waved the flag that started the race, jumping 3 to 4 feet off the ground. In his association with the National Hot Rod Assoc., he was flagging the starts across the country. For many years he traveled the U.S. judging car shows as a top official. In 2010, he was inducted into and honored by the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame. He often commented that this was the greatest recognition he ever received. In addition, he was a founding member of many car clubs and associations, current member of 11, including The Stardusters Club, Wild Bunch Corvette Club, and Missouri Valley Timing Assoc.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, and watched old western movies. He was a noted collector of small scale cars, including trains, puzzles, old toys, and unusual keys.

Son – Darren Bossow of Beemer
Grandson – Steve
Sister – Sharon K. (Lloyd) Schulz of Fremont
Nephew – Jeff (Stacey) Schulz of Omaha
Niece – Sherisse Wilkie of Beaver Dam, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandsons Dustin Cunningham and Derik Bossow.
A memorial service will be held 10:30am Saturday, February 18 at The Presbyterian Church in Fremont. Family will receive friends for one hour before the service at the church.
