Darlene Joy Kollmorgen was born to Theodore and Dorothea (Rex) Kollmorgen on Feb. 10, 1934, in Leigh, Neb. She shared her birthday with her two sisters. She attended St. John Lutheran School in rural Madison, Neb. (Green Garden), where her parents were her teachers. She graduated from St. John High School in Seward, Neb., and then attended Concordia Teachers' College in Seward.
After college, she taught at St. Paul Lutheran School in Kingsville, Tex., where she met her husband, Merlin Oerman, who was stationed at Kingsville Naval Air Station. They were married May 30, 1953, at St. John Lutheran in Madison and were blessed with four children. They lived on the farm between Craig and Uehling, Neb., for 40 years before retiring to Fremont in 1997. While living on the farm Darlene worked for the Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland.
Survivors include her husband, Merlin; four children: Shauna Gunnink of Joliet, Ill.; Rebecca Oerman of Truman, Minn.; Chris Oerman and wife, Melissa, of Lincoln, Neb.; and Andrew Oerman and wife, Kelli, of Omaha, Neb.; Sister, Gloria Bass and husband, Jerry, of Corpus Christi, Tex.; brother Rex Kollmorgen and wife, Sandra, of Toledo, Ohio; brother-in-law Bernard Oerman, and wife Joyce of Hooper, Neb.; many nieces and nephews; and special family friends, Gene Ingalise and wife, Suki, of Las Vegas, Nev.
Darlene and Merlin were also blessed with seven grandchildren: Haley Brown and husband, Brian, of Yorkville, Ill.; Brady Gunnink and wife, Gillian, of Chicago, Ill.; Benjamin Gunnink and wife, Allison, of Joliet, Ill.; Austin, Jackson and Carson Oerman of Lincoln, Neb.; and Jaylen Ricks of Omaha, Neb.; and four great-grandchildren: Isabella, and soon-to-be born twins Piper and Paige Brown; and Iris Gunnink.
She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Herbert and Ruth Oerman; son-in-law, Eric Gunnink; sister Gaylia and husband Robert Hamilton; sister-in-law Ione and husband Marvin Hoeneman.
The funeral will be 10:30am Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church east of Winslow. The Rev. Jonathan Ripke will officiate. Burial will follow in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Lutherans for Life and Immanuel Lutheran School. Visitation will be at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont on Tuesday from 3pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6pm to 8pm. Visitation will continue 1 hour before the service at the church.
